Writing is your ability to articulate your thoughts. We've entered an age where AI is doing the vast majority of writing—from synthesis to polish—and in the process, people are losing the muscle of thinking clearly on paper.
Draft is a document editor designed to nudge people to actually write themselves and iterate with AI, rather than outsourcing the thinking entirely. You write first. Then you highlight a passage and ask for feedback, propose edits, or discuss your argument with Claude. The AI is a coach, not a ghostwriter.
This form factor also opens the door for teachers. Edit history tracks every change with timestamps, so instructors can see that a student spent time thinking and iterating—not just prompting. It breaks the taboo of using AI in writing at all, because the right response isn't to ban AI, it's to give people feedback and help them become better writers.
Under the hood, Draft is built on Plate.js (Slate), an open-source rich text framework whose JSON-native document model makes it far more conducive for AI agents to edit via MCP than traditional editors. Instead of rewriting the whole document on every interaction, agents can make surgical, formatting-preserving edits through typed tools—replacing a sentence, applying bold to a phrase, inserting a citation—all while keeping the surrounding styles intact.
